Custody & Parenting Mediation
Legal Decision-Making and Parenting Time, planned together.
Arizona terminology
Arizona uses the terms Legal Decision-Making (major decisions about education, health care and religious upbringing) and Parenting Time (the schedule each parent spends with the child).
Mediation gives parents a structured setting to discuss both, with the child's needs at the center.
Topics parents often discuss
- Weekly and school-year schedules
- Holidays, birthdays and summer
- Transportation and exchanges
- Communication between households
- School and activity decisions
- Health care decisions
- Introducing new partners
- Relocation considerations
The role of the family specialist
In the Family Resolution and Comprehensive packages, a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist may participate where appropriate to support communication and co-parenting planning.
Therapy is not automatically part of mediation, and the LMFT is not the children's therapist unless separately engaged.
Parenting questions
This page is educational and is not legal advice. Mediation is voluntary and may not be appropriate for every family. Some matters may still require court filings, judicial approval or independent legal advice.
